The relationship between schemata and psychotic symptoms in adult survivors of developmental trauma: A mixed methods study

BACKGROUND: Many people with psychotic symptoms have survived psychological trauma and psychological trauma is an established risk factor for psychosis. Trauma-focused psychotherapy (TPFT) has been suggested as a potential treatment for reducing psychotic symptoms. AIMS: To investigate the effectiveness, tolerability, and acceptability of TFPT for psychotic symptoms. METHOD: A systematic review was conducted, including studies of any form of psychotherapy that identified as trauma-focused and measured psychotic symptom as an outcome across a broad range of diagnoses. RESULTS: From 2584 papers initially identified, 17 studies of 857 participants met eligibility criteria. The best evidence for effectiveness is in support of exposure-based therapies, and the targeting of memories of trauma that appear linked to the psychotic symptoms. TFPT were found to be well tolerated, with very few adverse events. However, only four controlled trials were identified, and risk of bias was high across studies as a whole. CONCLUSIONS: There is preliminary evidence that TFPT using exposure is effective and well tolerated. Methodologically rigorous trials testing the efficacy of TFPT for the treatment of psychotic symptoms are needed for appropriate assessment of this promising intervention

Long-Term Outcomes of Low Achieving Third Grade Readers

This brief examines long-term academic outcomes for students who demonstrate low reading achievement in third grade. Following three cohorts of students from third grade through early high school, we find that students who are behind in third grade are unlikely to ever read proficiently. Economically disadvantaged students, Black students, and male students demonstrate less improvement in reading achievement over time than other types of students

GAP ANALYSIS OF DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE PROGRAM MANAGEMENT COMPETENCY STANDARDS IN PREPARATION FOR THE SHIFT TO PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT IN DEFENSE ACQUISITIONS

The purpose of this study is to perform a gap analysis on the existing Department of Defense (DOD) program management competency standards to determine if changes are required to fully adopt product portfolio management (PPM) strategies in defense acquisitions. We do this by comparing the current DOD standards to the Project Management Institute's Portfolio Management Professional certification standards. We ask where the gaps in the standards exist and where the standards align, and assign a Barrier to Implementation (BTI) score to each gap in the DOD standard. The study found that the DOD is on average 41% aligned with industry standards. In the higher weighted domains of Governance and Strategic Alignment, alignment percentages are significantly lower. The composite BTI score for the DOD is 1.45, indicating low to medium BTIs for most of the gaps. Results do not suggest that the DOD is incapable of conducting PPM, but rather that the current competency standards do not align with industry best practices. Microbiota at Multiple Body Sites during Pregnancy in a Rural Tanzanian Population and Effects of Moringa-Supplemented Probiotic Yogurt

The nutritional status of pregnant women is vital for healthy outcomes and is a concern for a large proportion of the world\u27s population. The role of the microbiota in pregnancy and nutrition is a promising new area of study with potential health ramifications. In many African countries, maternal and infant death and morbidity are associated with malnutrition. Here, we assess the influence of probiotic yogurt containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1, supplemented with Moringa plant as a source of micronutrients, on the health and oral, gut, vaginal, and milk microbiotas of 56 pregnant women in Tanzania. In an open-label study design, 26 subjects received yogurt daily, and 30 were untreated during the last two trimesters and for 1 month after birth. Samples were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and dietary recalls were recorded. Women initially categorized as nourished or undernourished consumed similar calories and macronutrients, which may explain why there was no difference in the microbiota at any body site. Consumption of yogurt increased the relative abundance of Bifidobacterium and decreased Enterobacteriaceae in the newborn feces but had no effect on the mother\u27s microbiota at any body site. The microbiota of the oral cavity and GI tract remained stable over pregnancy, but the vaginal microbiota showed a significant increase in diversity leading up to and after birth. In summary, daily micronutrient-supplemented probiotic yogurt provides a safe, affordable food for pregnant women in rural Tanzania, and the resultant improvement in the gut microbial profile of infants is worthy of further study

Radio Planetary Nebulae in the Small Magellanic Cloud

We present ten new radio continuum (RC) detections at catalogued planetary nebula (PN) positions in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC): SMPS6, LIN 41, LIN 142, SMP S13, SMP S14, SMP S16, J18, SMP S18, SMP S19 and SMP S22. Additionally, six SMC radio PNe previously detected, LIN 45, SMP S11, SMPS17, LIN321, LIN339 and SMPS24 are also investigated (re-observed) here making up a population of 16 radio detections of catalogued PNe in the SMC. These 16 radio detections represent ~15 % of the total catalogued PN population in the SMC. We show that six of these objects have characteristics that suggest that they are PN mimics: LIN 41, LIN 45, SMP S11, LIN 142, LIN 321 and LIN 339. We also present our results for the surface brightness - PN radius relation ({\Sigma}-D) of the SMC radio PN population. These are consistent with previous SMC and LMC PN measurements of the ({\Sigma}-D) relation.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysics and Space Scienc

Early Access: Elementary School Outcomes for Arkansas Better Chance Pre-Kindergarten Participants

The Arkansas Better Chance (ABC) program has been providing low-income and at-risk Arkansas children with tuition-free pre-K since 1991. Enrollment in the state’s public pre-K programs has increased modestly over the last ten years. This brief reports the results of an analysis of the 3rd and 5th grade outcomes for students who attended ABC pre-K in the academic years of 2011-12 through 2014-15. We find that students who enroll in ABC programs in the year prior to starting Kindergarten outperform similar peers on math and reading state tests in 3rd grade, but these effects largely fadeout by 5th grade
